Spring DWA

Survival in the Snow

What would you do to survive in the wild? In the book Snow Bound by: Harry Mazer. Where a spoiled boy named Tony and a troubled girl named Cindy, share their story of survival and emotional growth in the wilderness. It shows that you should cherish what you have because, you might wake up one day and have it all taken away.

Snow Bound is about two kids that get lost in the wilderness and have to survive. The kids names are: Cindy and Tony. Cindy is a unfriendly girl that is hitchhiking trying to get home. Tony is a spoiled boy who is trying to find a stray dog he named Arthur. Tony steals his mom’s car to find Arthur. On the way he meets Cindy. So, to impress her, Tony tries to take a shortcut. Which goes horrible wrong and crashes in the middle of nowhere. To survive they burn wood in the car, ration cookies, and fight against frostbite. Tony leaves for a couple days to find civilization. Only to come back with some canned foods. Then, trying to civilization again, Cindy and Tony leave the car. After a little while, they come across a ravine, and Tony falls in it and breaks his leg. Then wolves start to chase them as they try escape.

The character’s changed a lot during this book. Tony changes from a spoiled child and becomes more mature. He even offered to pay his mom for the damages on the car. Because of this life-threatening experience, he has developed into a better person. On the other hand, Cindy was a quiet girl that has a hard time making friends.  As the book moved along, so did Cindy. She starts to have more conversions with Tony. Slowly, she was learning how to make friends, starting with Tony.

Tony and Cindy learn to appreciate what they have at home, after all the challenges of survival. In order to survive Tony trudges though the snow looking for civilization, rationing cookies, and fending off wolves with a broken leg. That shows determination to make it back home. Cindy fights frost-bite on her leg, battles starvation, and helps Tony with his broken leg. The challenges thrown at her tested her.

You might wake up one day and have all that you cherished, taken away. Tony went from spoiled kid, and faced with the challenge of survival, matured and appreciates every thin he has now. Cindy went from shy quiet girl to a true friend of Tony’s after helping him with his broken leg and surviving in the wilderness.
